Thermal-Break Frames and Double Glazing: What Is the Difference?
A thermal break concerns the frame construction; double glazing concerns the glass unit. They are different parts of a window, not interchangeable performance ratings. Select the complete configuration against the project's requirements rather than relying on either term alone.
Two components, two different questions
A thermal break interrupts the conductive path through a metal frame. An insulating glass unit places separated panes in a sealed assembly. The frame and the glazing therefore need to be described separately in a configuration request.
| Part | What it describes | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Thermal-break frame | The construction separating metal frame sections | Exact frame system and the applicable assembly details |
| Double or other insulating glazing | The arrangement of panes and sealed spaces | Pane construction, spacer or cavity description and any specified coatings |
| Complete window | Frame, glass, opening arrangement and seals as an assembly | Required rating or report, tested configuration and relevance to the project |
Read a specification without filling in the gaps
Copy the glazing construction and any frame details exactly as recorded for the selected model. Keep standard, optional and unclassified catalog entries separate. Do not turn a wall-thickness figure, hardware brand or opening animation into an insulation, acoustic or weather-resistance claim.
Ask for the relevant evidence
State the required metric, test method or local approval need. Check the product, configuration, size and conditions covered by any report.
Keep separate requirements separate
Thermal, solar, acoustic, water, air and structural requirements are different questions. A statement about one does not answer all the others.
Confirm the actual order configuration
Make sure the agreed glass, frame, finish, hardware and opening arrangement match the quotation and final drawings.
Use the current model data as your next step
The current window comparison gathers recorded glazing, wall-thickness and hardware entries from the same catalog data used by the product pages. Review the full model before discussing alternatives; a model number alone is not a performance ranking.
Start with your requirements.
Send the intended model, opening sizes and project requirements. Include the exact report or rating you need to review, rather than only asking for a thermal-break or double-glazed window.
Discuss your window configurationThe component distinction is general technical guidance. The linked product pages contain the site's recorded configurations; a product name or component description is not a whole-window test result.
