Casement or Sliding Windows: What Should You Compare?
A side-hinged sash swings; a horizontal sliding sash moves along a track. Begin with the space available and how the window will be used, then confirm the actual model's opening modes, screens, access and project requirements. Neither opening label is a universal performance guarantee.
Compare the actual operating space
Check movement from the intended viewing side and review nearby furniture, walkways, curtains, exterior features and access for operation. A model with tilt-and-turn, lift, drift or side-pressure operation needs its own movement sequence checked; do not assume that every model behaves like a simple casement or slider.
| Question | Side-hinged / casement | Horizontal sliding |
|---|---|---|
| Sash movement | Allow for the swing in the selected direction | Check travel, panel overlap and the resulting clear opening |
| Daily operation | Check handle reach and obstacles through the swing | Check handle reach and the agreed panel sequence |
| Cleaning & access | Confirm which faces can be reached safely | Confirm access to glass faces, tracks and overlapping panels |
| Screen arrangement | Confirm the screen position and interference with movement | Confirm screen track, panel arrangement and clearance |
| Project requirements | Review the exact configuration and applicable evidence | Review the exact configuration and applicable evidence |
Look at the specific model, not only the category
The current 93 model includes tilt-and-turn operation. The current 139 model is a panoramic sliding system. Use their recorded configurations and demonstrations to compare the movement you need; these examples do not imply equal dimensions or interchangeable technical ratings.
Record the arrangement clearly
A drawing should identify fixed and moving panels, opening direction, viewing side and relevant obstructions. Final size, panel arrangement, hardware, glass, screens and installation details must be confirmed for the selected product.
Operation & access
Who operates the window, where the handle is reached and how cleaning or maintenance will be carried out.
Safety & local requirements
Any restriction, guarding, emergency-opening or other project requirement that needs review; the opening label alone does not establish compliance.
Performance evidence
Request evidence for the particular size, configuration and required metric. Do not assume all hinged or all sliding models share the same result.
Start with your requirements.
Share the opening location, sizes, viewing side and any furniture, access or screen constraints. Use a drawing to show the intended movement and identify what remains undecided.
Discuss an opening arrangementThe movement distinction is general guidance. The site's current model pages and configured demonstrations identify each model's available modes; they do not replace installation design, safety review or performance evidence.
